CNN —Just weeks ago, it seemed as if Jürgen Klopp was set to end his tenure as Liverpool manager with a flourish. The club was in contention to win the English Premier League, was favorite to win the Europa League and in the quarterfinals of the FA Cup. Adding three trophies to the League Cup already won in February was not such a fanciful prospect. As he was about to enter the pitch as a second-half substitute, television coverage showed Salah and Klopp exchanging words on the sidelines. “Mo Salah is a player who has started the majority of games for Liverpool and he will be fuming to be on the bench.

CNN —Liverpool’s chances of a historic quadruple in Jürgen Klopp’s final season at the club are over after falling to a 4-3 extra time defeat against bitter rival Manchester United in a frenetic FA Cup quarterfinal. Goals from Scott McTominay, Antony, Marcus Rashford and Amad Diallo gave United the win in a topsy-turvy FA Cup classic at Old Trafford in Manchester. “The first 35 minutes I think was the best minutes from our season,” United manager Erik ten Hag told the ITV broadcast after the game. CNN —Manchester United legend Dwight Yorke has welcomed British billionaire Jim Ratcliffe’s investment into the club, saying that the new co-owner can restore the European powerhouse to its glory years. Yorke concedes, however, that for the time being the Red Devils will not be able to compete for the English Premier League title. Yorke would go on to win a further two Premier Leagues with the Red Devils before leaving the club in the summer of 2002. “We really should be in the [Premier League] top four relatively comfortably, and it hasn’t been that easy a ride for us. “I think Alan Shearer is still the current [record] holder in the Premier League and was a real goal machine.

Jim Ratcliffe of INEOS meets members of the press ahead of the Premier League match between Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur at Old Trafford on January 14, 2024 in Manchester, England. New Manchester United co-owner Jim Ratcliffe said on Friday that return on investment had nothing to do with his decision to invest in the English soccer giant. Ratcliffe's comments come shortly after the British petrochemicals billionaire and INEOS chief executive finally completed a deal to buy a minority stake in Manchester United. The Glazer family, which have owned Manchester United since 2005, retain a majority stake under the terms of the agreement. "And also, we have moved into consumer markets, you know certainly automotive is a huge consumer market obviously, and the INEOS name wasn't particularly well known so, through sport, obviously people are getting to know INEOS," Ratcliffe said.

CNN —Manchester United is on the brink of an early Champions League exit after twice throwing away a two-goal lead in a chaotic 3-3 draw with Galatasaray. In the Champions League, you get punished for your mistakes, so we have to learn from that.” Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag to TNT Sports after his team's 3-3 draw to Galatasaray on November 29. BENGALURU, Nov 14 (Reuters) - India are favourites heading into their World Cup semi-final against New Zealand but the hosts will be nervous about facing a side who are at their most dangerous when they have nothing to lose, former Black Caps skipper Ross Taylor said. MANCHESTER, England, Nov 10 (Reuters) - Manchester United and Marcus Rashford are unhappy with his recent performances manager Erik ten Hag has said after the striker's red card contributed to their midweek Champions League loss but the Dutchman believes he will rediscover his form. "We have to win every game, so we are very disappointed if losing any game," Ten Hag said. It's always about being in the process, thinking about the process, and then it's about managing their process. Ten Hag, whose performance as manager has been called into question during his side's poor run of form, was asked if he trusts his players as United flopped after Rashford's red card. Newcastle won 3-0 at Old Trafford and Howe was pleased to see a heavily rotated starting lineup repay his faith in them. "It was great to be able to give everyone an opportunity and I thought they responded magnificently," Howe told reporters ahead of Saturday's game against Arsenal. A stern test awaits, however, with Newcastle welcoming Mikel Arteta's Arsenal to St James' Park. The English Premier League club, whose future ownership remains uncertain as the Glazer family explore a potential sale, did not give any update on that process, which started nearly a year ago. Manchester United expect revenue of between 650 million and 680 million pounds for the fiscal year to June 2024, compared with 648.4 million in 2022/23. The club forecast adjusted core profit of between 140 million and 165 million pounds, compared with 155 million in 2022/23. For the quarter ended June 30, Manchester United reported a net loss of nearly 3 million pounds ($3.50 million), compared with a loss of 71 million pounds a year earlier. Annual net losses narrowed by 75% to 29 million pounds.

Another not-too-convincing victory at bottom club Sheffield United last weekend was admirable in its own way following the news of club great Bobby Charlton's death before kickoff. City suffered consecutive league defeats before the international break but have answered any doubts with wins over Brighton & Hove Albion and then at Young Boys on Wednesday in the Champions League. Guardiola will need no reminding that City lost at Old Trafford last year, having crushed United 6-3 at home. City also won the FA Cup final against United on their way to matching the Reds' treble of 1999. Sixth-placed Newcastle United will have to shrug off the disappointment of their Champions League loss to Borussia Dortmund as they face Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday.

CNN —Manchester United relied on two unlikely heroes – goalkeeper André Onana and defender Harry Maguire – in a much-needed Champions League victory against FC Copenhagen. Onana's penalty save denied Copenhagen late in the game. The Cameroonian international has made several errors since joining United this season, including in a Champions League defeat against Bayern Munich last month. The penalty save went some way to atoning for those mishaps, and Onana was duly mobbed by his teammates immediately after his heroics. “I’m very pleased, it was a narrow escape as we needed to win,” ten Hag told reporters after the match.
